Plan Schemes implemented by the Department

The Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs is the nodal Department to ensure availability of essential commodities of mass consumption at reasonable prices in all the scattered Islands of this UT, to ensure awareness of the consumers and redressal of their grievances and to ensure that perishable and packaged commodities are sold with correct quantity and scale to the customers. In order to achieve the objectives under each mandates the Department has been implementing the following three Plan schemes-

  • Strengthening of Public Distribution System
  • Strengthening of Consumer Protection Movement in the Union Territory
  • Strengthening of Weights and Measures organization

Scheme

Scheme No.1 - Strengthening Of Public Distribution System

  • The Scheme envisages expansion and strengthening of Public Distribution System to ensure availability of essential commodities to the vulnerable sections, especially in the rural areas where productivity and wages are comparatively low
  • It also envisages serving as an essential component for employment and income generation so that rise in price can be neutralized by additional income
  • With the help of this Scheme the Department envisages creating storage space to cop up the storage requirement of food grains
  • Growth of trade and commerce of essential commodities necessitates effective control and supervision over the Fair Price Shops and trade centers for enforcement of various control orders so as to check the rise in price and to take effective steps on hoarding, black-marketing and other activities of the trader. For this purpose, the scheme envisages strengthening of enforcement cell of this Department

Scheme No.2 - Strengthening Of Consumer Protection Movement In The UT

  • The Scheme envisages expansion and strengthening of Consumer Protection Movement in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  • The Consumer Movement even now is in its infancy in this territory, there is an urgent need for accelerating the consumer Movement to protect the Consumers from exploitation
  • The Scheme envisages providing required enforcement staff, field motivators, purchase of vehicles and to undertake publicity and training programme for consumer awareness and redressal of consumer grievances
