Tips for Consumers

  • All weights measures and weighing and measuring instruments are required to be verified periodically and stamped by the Legal Metrology Officer under the law
  • Look for the stamp of verification on the weights and Measures. This is your guarantee that these have been tested and found accurate
  • The trader is required to use the beam-scale suspended from hook or stand to avoid manipulation by hand to his own advantage
  • Buy milk in terms of litres and not in kilogram
  • Learn to read the scale indications and observe the weighing of your purchase
  • Petrol pumps are periodically checked by the Legal Metrology Officer for supply of accurate quantity of petrol. In case of suspected short supply, report the matter to the Legal Metrology Officer.
  • Ensure that packaged commodities purchased by you bears the marking and labeling in regard to date of packing, the net contents and the price etc
  • The retail sale price of the packaged commodity has to be indicated on the package. Don’t pay more than the price indicated (MRP)
  • While buying sweets ensure that the weights of the box is not included in the weight of sweets
  • While taking delivery of the cooking gas cylinders see that the seal on it is intact

 Tips for Traders

  • All weights, measures and weighing and measuring instruments are required to be verified periodically for accuracy by the Legal Metrology Officer under the law. Ensure that all weights, measures and weighing and measuring instruments in your possession have been duly verified in time.
  • The beam scale should be suspended from a hook or a stand
  • Weighing instruments like counter scale and self indicating scales should be kept in such a way that buyer can observe the process of weighment properly
  • Ensure the packaged commodity sold by you bears on the body of the package or on the label security affixed thereto the following indicates:-
    • i)   Name of the commodity
    • ii)   Name and address of the manufacturer/packer
    • iii)   The month and year of manufacturer packing
    • iv)   The net quantity, in terms of standard unit of, weights, measure or number
    • v)   The price
  • Indicate the retail sale price (i.e. the price inclusive of all taxes and charges) on the package
  • It is unlawful to sell packaged commodity at a retail sale price higher than that marked on the package
